Chapter 3 Bad Luck
“I don’t like Chris,” Paige said callously, trying her best to hide the hurt and pain in her flat voice.
Sierra stopped Wendy from saying anything further. She tugged on Wendy’s sleeve and shook her head.
Wendy looked at Sierra and glumly closed her mouth.
“Mom, Paige is not that kind of person. As her sister, I know that. Chris is her brother-in-law. She will never do that. She’s a kind and honest girl,” Sierra told Wendy.
Wendy glanced at Paige and scoffed. She said, “Don’t let Sierra down. She trusts you. Don’t do something shameless like stealing her man.”
Paige had no words.
‘Who was Mom calling shameless?’
She had done nothing to deserve that. Yet, Wendy labeled her shameless.
Paige was sad and angry, but she said nothing. She knew that whatever she did would be wrong in Wendy’s eyes. She was a mistake to Wendy and had accepted that long ago.
She was used to facing her mother’s anger and disgust with silence.
…
Chris walked his family to the hotel entrance.
“Tell me what’s on your mind, Chris.” Ann, Chris’ mother, asked with a frown.
She was not fond of Sierra, to begin with. More accurately, she was not keen on the Quirks. She believed that marriage should be between people of the same social class. While the Quirks were wealthy, the family was not good enough for the Jewells. Chris’ marriage to Sierra would not have benefited his career or the family in any way.
In Ann’s opinion, Chris should have used the cheating scandal to ruin the Quirks’ reputation and made sure they never recovered.
It never occurred to Ann that Chris would marry the Quirks’ youngest daughter instead after Sierra’s betrayal.
Why was Chris into the Quirks’ daughters?
Chris had his pick of any woman in the world but chose to marry into the Quirk family.
“I’m married and determined to make the most of it. I hope to give you a grandchild soon,” Chris said indifferently.
Silence ensued.
Ann turned red with anger.
“Alright. I’m glad you see it that way.” Zander was pleased with Chris, and it showed on his face.
Ann was livid, but she knew better than to throw a fit.
Since Zander approved of Chris’ decision, who was Ann to defy her father-in-law?
Zander was the chairman of the Jewell Group and head of the Jewell family. Ann revered him so much that she would never challenge his authority.
With the chauffeur bringing the car around, Chris watched as his family got into the car.
Zander said with a smile, “Go on. It’s been a long day. Get some rest.”
Chris gave a nod.
He waited until the car was out of sight before turning around and walking into the hotel.
The Quirks were still around when Chris returned to the suite. The family looked awkward to see Chris.
Chris drew close with composure and said to Bob, “It’s late. You must be tired. You should head back and get some rest.”
Bob was overjoyed that Chris showed them concern. He answered with a smile, “Sure.”
Wendy and Sierra were restless, unable to figure out what Chris was thinking.
“Come on,” Bob told Sierra and Wendy.
Sierra looked at Chris with tearful eyes as she sat still on the sofa.
Wendy glanced at Chris and said, “Chris… Sierra needs a word with you.”
Chris looked at Sierra and nodded. “Go on. Tell me.”
His expression was calm, reflecting no hatred or joy.
His poise threw Sierra for a loop. She would have preferred Chris to show his anger, even if it meant yelling or insulting her. At least that would have shown he cared about her.
However, he gave her a blank face. Did that mean he did not care about her?
Sierra refused to believe that Chris had no feelings for her. Why would he propose to go out if he did not care or love her?
“Chris…” Tears streamed down her face just when she called his name.
Furrowing his brows, Chris looked Sierra in the eye. “Today was Paige’s and my wedding. Why are you congratulating us with tears?”
Sierra’s heart shattered, and her tears flowed freely. His flat tone was more painful than any insult could have been.
He really did not care.
Chris was unfazed by her tears and vulnerability.
“It’s bad luck to cry at weddings, my dear sister-in-law,” Chris commented harshly.
Sierra ran out, sobbing and covering her mouth, unable to bear the insult.
“Sierra.” Wendy anxiously chased after her.
Bob looked at Paige, then Chris. He sighed and left.
Paige and Chris were the only ones left in the suite. The silence was deafening.
