Chapter 19 What a Silver Tongue!
We were both taken aback. Oswald suddenly frowned, but I was looking at him with my eyes sharper and sharper. I aggressively looked at him and said firmly, “Answer the phone!” Oswald froze. “Oswald, pick up the phone now! I’ll give you one more chance!” I looked at Oswald, held Jocelyn, who was still crying, close, and straightened my body. “I thought that even if the men of the whole world would betray their wives, you wouldn’t. But you let me down.” I finally shouted the thing I didn’t want to face out. I never thought that Oswald would cheat on me. With these words, I burst into tears. Together with the crying child, there was endless sadness in the room. Under my coercion, Oswald slowly took out the phone which was still ringing loud, and it was indeed quite disharmonious with the atmosphere at the moment. I looked at Oswald, who stood in place and looked at me at a loss. Then he gradually clenched up his hands. I gritted my teeth and then commanded, “Answer it!” Oswald picked up the phone, glanced at it, and said, “It’s Lelia!” “Answer it!” Whoever it was, I was not giving Oswald another chance. Oswald hesitated for a moment. But seeing I insisted, he slowly answered the phone and quickly said, “Lelia, I am talking to Cass now. Can’t we talk about it tomorrow?” “OK! I will call you tomorrow!” It was indeed Lelia on the other side of the line. Oswald looked at me innocently. I was terrified for a moment and didn’t know what to do. Hearing Jocelyn’s sad cry, I had no reason to entangle Oswald anymore. So I got up and took Jocelyn back to her room and slammed the door. “Cass… Cass…” The moment the door was closed, I broke down sobbing. I thought, “I was so close to ripping his mask off but he got away with it. Lelia must be covering for him! It is indeed what Lelia would do! We don’t like each other and she’s my Nemesis.” This time, Oswald seemed to be a stranger to me. It seemed that I didn’t know him at all. I didn’t expect him to be so scheming and sophisticated. I was terrified to realize that I had never had any idea about what the man, who had slept next to me for so many years, was thinking. Oswald kept knocking at the door for hours, but I didn’t open the door for him. This night, I lay on the bed with Jocelyn in my arms and the scene of her falling down kept flashing in my mind. I was so regretful that I did not sleep all night. Early in the morning, Oswald made breakfast and stood outside Jocelyn’s room with an innocent look, calling us to get up. After dressing Jocelyn, I carried her out of the room. Then Oswald hugged me and Jocelyn with a look of guilt and said, “Cass, don’t be angry! I’m sorry! It was my fault!” Oswald pressed his face to Jocelyn’s little face. “I’m even more sorry for you, sweetheart! I am so sorry!” Looking at the wound in Jocelyn’s mouth, Oswald touched it softly with his eyes red. I could see that Oswald was really sorry. After all, Jocelyn’s small lips were still swollen. It was all because of his betrayal that Jocelyn had suffered all this. “Cass, believe me! I will not cheat on you! Stop woolgathering! I feel sorry to see you like this. I reflected on myself last night and found maybe it was because I ignored you for this period of time. It is my bad! So, let’s go have a vacation in Seittly this weekend, okay? There are children’s playgrounds, hot springs…” I was upset to see Oswald trying to play up to me, but I warned myself not to act rashly and alert the enemy. Considering what he had done, I should try my best to fight for the greatest justice for Jocelyn. I collected my emotions. “OK. You should have breakfast and go to work now! I was upset about what Lelia said yesterday, so… Forget it!” I used Lelia as an excuse. With a shout of joy, Oswald hugged me and kissed me as if he had been granted amnesty. “I know you are always reasonable, honey. Just ignore Lelia! Honey, I can’t live without you. I was up all night last night. So no more woolgathering, OK? I love you so much!” I thought, “How ridiculous! Am I reasonable? Yes, I think so. And is it the reason why he cheats on me?” I forced a smile. “Let’s have breakfast!” Although Jocelyn was a small kid, she was good at observing others’ emotions. Seeing we both smiled, she began chattering. She hugged me with one hand and Oswald with the other. It seemed our family was having a happy and harmonious breakfast. However, the wound on Jocelyn’s mouth kept reminding me that Oswald, who was drifting away, had caused irreparable damage to my daughter and me, and I was wondering how I could find out who his mistress was as soon as possible. After having breakfast and coaxing Jocelyn and me, Oswald went to work. No sooner had Oswald left than an unexpected call came in.
