Chapter 26 Voice from the Phone
I was stunned, but I quickly regained my composure. Yes, I couldn’t just lose everything that belonged to me like this without a fight. Even if I fought for it and ended up losing, I would have no regrets.
The phone stopped ringing.
Looking at Eleanor’s calm and determined eyes, I gradually calmed down, and my thoughts became clear.
“I understood!”
I wiped my face and said to Eleanor, “I’m grateful that at a time like this, I have someone clear–headed by my side. You just reminded me of what to do.”
When the phone rang again, I had adjusted my emotions. Eleanor handed me the phone with a serious nod and said, “You can do it!”
I took a deep breath and answered the call calmly. “Hello, honey! You finally called back. Let me ask you where’s the money in our account. Jocelyn had pneumonia, and we rushed to the hospital in the middle of the night. But I had no money. When I tried to withdraw cash, there was nothing left! What’s going on?”
Eleanor, upon hearing my words, slapped her forehead.
But I knew Oswald well enough. I had to speak like this to match my temperament. If I didn’t mention it, Oswald would be on guard.
“Ah, honey, don’t worry! I used the money! I’ll explain when I get back.” Oswald immediately comforted me. “How’s Jocelyn doing now?”
“She’s still on the IV drip, with a temperature of 39.5 degrees. It’s quite

serious. When are you coming back? Hurry back!” I pretended to be anxious. “I’m scared! I had to bother your parents in the middle of the night! If you use the money again, could you please let me know in advance? You’re not at home. Do you know what kind of situation our family will be in?”
Such a conversation was normal in the past, but at this moment, maintaining this calm tone took a lot of effort.
I laughed at myself. I was a good liar.
“I understand. I’ll be back as soon as possible. Take care of our daughter! I’ll try to finish things and come back in the morning!” Oswald consoled me. “Take care of yourself and take a break when you can. Thank you for your hard work, honey!”
Icould only give a bitter smile in response to Oswald’s comfort and
instruction.
“Okay, I need to hang up now and go take care of things!”
Just as I was about to hang up, right before the phone left my ear, a playful and coquettish voice came through the phone.
I heard it clearly, as if it was right next to my ear. It instantly drained me of all my energy.
That was a woman’s voice. Could it be that while I was carrying my sick daughter to the hospital in the middle of the night, Oswald was enjoying himself with his mistress in Saltdol City?
I dared not continue thinking about it. A salty and fishy taste rose in my throat, and I sat down on the hospital bed, the phone dropping to the ground with a “clack.”
Eleanor was startled by the way I looked and immediately crouched in front of me. She grabbed my hand and asked anxiously, “Cass, what’s wrong? What happened?”

I stared blankly at Eleanor while the coquettish voice echoed in my ears. Eleanor shook my arm and said, “Can you speak? What did Oswald say?” I burst into tears. “Eleanor, find me a reliable lawyer!”
Eleanor immediately hugged me and patted my back. “Okay! Don’t cry!”
Two days later, I met the lawyer recommended by Eleanor, Pearson Dylan. I explained in detail the current situation and Pearson told me that what I had stated had no value. It could all be considered hearsay with no substantial evidence, and the chances of winning were low.
“How can I maximize my benefits? After all, I have a child. She’s only four years old!” I urgently asked, “And I started the company! I need to defend my rights and interests!”
Pearson thought for a moment and reminded me, “To maximize your benefits, you can only gather some favorable evidence. Based on the current situation you described, Oswald is still unaware that you’ve discovered his infidelity. So, by keeping things as they are, it’s easier to gather information, whereas it’s difficult to collect evidence otherwise.”
I laughed bitterly and said, “So I have to endure it!”
Pearson nodded realistically and gave me a clear answer, “Yes!”
After leaving Pearson’s law firm, I felt completely drained. I had little chance of winning, despite Oswald’s shameless affair, blatant asset transfer, and enjoying the fruits of my company without guilt.
This was unfair.
I sat by the river for a long time. Looking at the surging water, I had no idea what I should do.
It wasn’t until my daughter called me that I woke up from my daze. In a childish voice, she asked me on the phone, “Mommy, why aren’t you back

yet? Did you get lost?”
I pursed my lips. Yes, in a way, I had indeed lost my way.
On my way back, I called Eleanor. But before I could say anything, she excitedly told me she had good news to share.
