Chapter 4 Truth Hurts

I didn’t pick up the call until I was back in the bedroom. I pouted when I answered, “Good for you. You left me hanging there.” “Something came up in the office.” Eleanor sounded tired, her voice hoarse. “I called you as soon as I finished working. Stop whining. I’m not as carefree as you.” I hesitated and asked, “Well… You said you saw Oswald two days ago. Where? Do you remember the extra time?” I had been meaning to ask these questions all day. Eleanor paused significantly before replying calmly, “I forgot. I saw him on the street while driving.” “OK.” Somehow, I felt disappointed. But I stopped worrying. My palms were sweaty when I uncurled my fists. I laughed lightly and thought, “Will I be happy if I verify that Oswald is cheating?” I had to admit that Oswald was the pillar of my world. My life would collapse without him. “You love him so much that you get excited whenever we talk about him. Think for yourself more. Jocelyn is in kindergarten now. You should start working again. Don’t tell me that you want to depend on Oswald forever. If you keep on cooping up at home, you’ll be completely disconnected from society. By then, Oswald will be your whole world,” Eleanor shouted teasingly. I chuckled in embarrassment and sighed, “But Oswald said that…” “See? It always Oswald says this and Oswald says that… I’m right. You can only see Oswald now and you follow him so blindly. Will you kill yourself if he tells you to? Will you be fooled by him willingly?” Eleanor said angrily. “Take that back! Oswald will never fool me,” I retorted. “Right. He won’t and I will,” Eleanor snorted. “Truth hurts. Think about it carefully. You have to create your own value. Stop being a housewife who only cares about her family. That’s not love. That’s st* pid. If he loves you, he’ll show that he cares. When your only topic is your household chords, soon, he’ll lose his interest in you. “I didn’t want to lecture you. But you’ve given up yourself for Oswald and Jocelyn.” Eleanor babbled and I never had the chance to retort. Sensing my silence, she stopped ranting and softened her tone. “Cassie, I hope I can see that confident woman again. You were a brilliant student and my idol then. I feel sorry for you that you wasted your talent.” “Stop it. You’re just sweet-talking to make up for the lecture. I wonder who pissed you off today and you put it out on me.” Both of us laughed. Eleanor and I were always honest with each other. Although she said something familiar before, her talk gave me a strange feeling this time. For some reason, I was scared that Eleanor was hinting at something. Oswald knocked and walked in. He smiled gently, “Honey, dinner is ready.” He came to urge me to have dinner. Eleanor heard his voice and said, “Alright. You should go.” She then lowered her voice and warned, “Think carefully about what I said earlier. Don’t be fooled by the perfect picture at present.” Eleanor ended the call. Oswald pulled me into his arms and kissed me. “Who is that?” “Eleanor.” “What are you talking about? Why the secrecy?” Oswald smiled and asked a seemingly casual question. He knew about my close relationship with Eleanor as the three of us were classmates. “I haven’t seen her in a while.” I paused at Oswald’s statement. So, Eleanor didn’t see him up close two days ago. I felt better as I thought I was overthinking again. Maybe Eleanor was mistaken like me. “What’s wrong?” Oswald noticed that I had zoned out and bent down to meet my eyes. He pinched my cheeks with both hands and kissed me again before asking lovingly, “Why do you space out? What’s on your mind?” His gaze was filled with concern. I snapped out of my stupor and smiled. “I’m fine. Let’s have dinner.” Oswald pulled me in and kissed my cheek before staring into my eyes. “Don’t hide anything from me, OK? We can solve the problem together.” I wrapped my arms around his waist and tilted my head up, smiling sweetly. “How could you call me paranoid when you act this way? I told you that I was fine. Come on.” Oswald returned my smile and relaxed. He kissed me again before pulling me out of the bedroom, his arm around my shoulder. Somehow, my doubt grew heavier.

Surviving Divorce Her Miraculous Second Chance By LeeFore Novel At night. I finally had the time to take a breath after putting my daughter in bed. I sat on the bed and scrolled through my phone idly. Suddenly, my finger stopped swiping when I saw a live-streaming channel. I immediately sat up straight and stared at my phone with wide eyes. Shame that the streamer had turned her camera away from the crowd. My heart was thumping, and my hand became sweaty. I hastily checked the time on the video and made sure that it was a live feed from my city.
